Pani Thuli (KayKay, Shreya Ghoshal, Thanvi)
Kanda Naal Muthalai (Subhiksha, Pooja)
Koo Koovena (Karthik, Harish Raghavendra, Mahalakshmi Iyer)
Erimalai Naane (Shankar Mahadevan, Vasundhara Das)
Merke Merke (Shankar Mahadevan, Sadhana Sargam)
Pushing It Hard (Yuvan Shankar Raja, Clinton, Premji)

Music review: 'Pani Thuli' and 'Merke Merke' make for pleasant listening. 'Koo Koovena' and 'Erimalai Naane' sound more like arguments between singers than songs. Very ordinary tunes and worse lyrics. In 'Pushing It Hard', Yuvan and Premji try to do bring hardcore rap to the Deccan, but fall woefully short. Which leaves us with the title song 'Kanda Naal Mudhalai'. I've always thought that mixing Carnatic music with Western elements would make for some great fusion, and Yuvan proves this beyond any doubt. Yeah, A.R.Rahman has already done it to some extent in Alai Payuthey, but this one is edgier, and has really raised the bar for the type of innovations that could be done with Carnatic music. I loved it, but we'll have to wait to see whether the people are ready to accept it. Did you like it? Let me know.

Oru Maalai (Karthik)
X-Machi (Mathangi, Nakul)
Suttum Vizhi (Sriram Parthasarathy, Bombay Jayashree)
Rahatulla (Anupama)
Rangola (Shankar Mahadevan, Sujatha)

Music review: I'll try my best to refrain from complaining about HJ's songs reminding me of his previous compositions. Having said that, Ghajini is certainly one of the better efforts by HJ this season. 'Oru Maalai' and 'Suttum Vizhi' are superb melodies that have some nice beats. While Karthik has done a great job in the former, I thought Sriram Parthasarathy's voice modulations could have been better for the latter. 'Rahatulla' is a foot-tapping number featuring the highly under-utilized Anupama. 'X Machi' and 'Rangola' sound good for a couple of times, but don't have repeat listenability. To summarize, this album is surely worth a hear. Now where have I heard the humming bit in 'Oru Maalai'... was it in 'Minnalae'?

Kadhal Enbathu (Chinmayi, Harish Raghavendra)
Kangal Kalangida (Karthik)
Kangal Kandadhu (Kay Kay, Sujatha)
Kangal Kandadhu 2 (Ganga, Ranjith)
Pangu Podu (Kay Kay, Ranjith)
Unakku Endru Oruthi (Unni Menon)
Dhalappa Kattuda (Sriram)
Geetha Mala (Devan, Ranjith, Sounder Rajan)

Music review: Helloooo Yuvan, wake up! A youthful college-based subject that's right up your alley, and this is all you could come up with? Very disappointing. Most of the songs reminded me of 'April Madhathil', especially 'Pangu Podu' which is almost a replica of 'Sight Adippom'. 'Kadhal Enbathu' is the best song of the album, but that's not saying much. 'Kangal Kalangida' is okay, but repeating the same tune two more times as 'Kangal Kandadhu' really tests ones patience. Hope Yuvan gets out of his rough patch soon.

Uyire En Uyire
Achu Vella
Thotta Power
Yaaridamum
Yaari Singaari
Theme Music

Music review: It is getting tougher and tougher to find a Harris Jayaraj album that doesn't remind you of any of his previous works. For Anniyan he had borrowed bits and pieces from his Arasatchi songs, but in Totti Jaya he goes one step further and reproduces one song completely from his compositions for the Telugu movie Gharshana. (Since these two movies are from the same producer, I guess its fine.) The song ‘Yaaridamum’ is a replica of ‘Ye Chilipi’, but Srinivas’ rendition of the original was much better than Ramesh Vinayagam’s effort for the Tamil version. Unfortunately, this is the best song of the album. Another melodious song ‘Uyire En Uyire’, comes a close second. The others are nothing out of the ordinary. ‘Thotta Power’ and ‘Yaari Singari’ are the type of songs one should expect from a Simbu movie, and ‘Achu Vella’ reminded me of ‘Pudhu Malar Thottu’ from Poovellaam Un Vaasam. To sum it up, the two melodies just about manage to salvage the album from mediocrity.

Urzu Urzu Durkut
Mele Chaliyan
Naam Adaa Likhna
Mele Chaliyan (Remix)
Naam Adaa Likhna (Remix)
Ajmer Wale Khwaja
Kahoon Kaise Sakhi
Yahaan Theme

Music review: When I came to realize that a couple of songs of Parineeta were "inspired", it did take some sheen off Shantanu Moitra's compositions for that movie. But that didn't stop me from from grabbing the first opportunity to listen to his next album, Yahaan. I wasn't disappointed. Shantanu has once again managed to get the best out of Shreya Ghosal, and my favorite of the three songs rendered by her is 'Urzu Urzu Durkut', which has a catchy tune and equally good orchestration. 'Naam Ada Likhna' is another melodious song and though Shaan doesn't have too many lines, he does a good job of supporting Shreya Ghosal. The third song by Shreya is 'Mele Chaliyan', which is a Punjabi celebration song and this one isn't bad either. This album also has remixed versions of the last two songs I mentioned. Unlike usual remix songs which just serve as fillers, the remix of 'Mele Chaliyan' is quite good and has some good fusion of Punjabi-folk and Techno elements. There are also two more songs from guest composer Nizami Bandhu. But these songs ('Ajmer Wale Khwaja' and 'Kahoon Kaise Kahoon') don't fit in with the rest of the album.

Aararai Kodi
Mayilirage
Varugirai
Thigu Thigu
Thazhuvudhu Thazhuvudhu
Maramkothiyae

Music review: Ah Aah (a.k.a 'Anbe Aaruyire' and formerly known as 'BF') starts off with a bang with the song 'Aararai Kodi'. This song reminds us of Rahman in his early days, and he shows that he's a class apart when it comes to percussion arrangements. After listening to this song, its natural to have high expectations for the rest of the album. And this is where Ah Aah falters. As with the album, most of the remaining songs start off well, but don't have enough to make it thoroughly enjoyable. Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't 'Mayilirage' and 'Maramkothiye' basically the same tune with just different tempos? Don't know whether this was intentional, or Rahman just hoping that no one would notice. In this album Rahman also achieves two things which I thought are impossible: make Sadhana Sargam's Tamil sound better in comparison, and make Shreya Ghosal's singing almost unbearable. Sadhana's song 'Thigu Thigu' has a catchy tune and great orchestration, but the male singer's Tamil is so awful that I think they deliberately removed his name from the credits so that people wont hunt him down. Shreya's song 'Thazhuvudhu' is undoubtedly the worst song of the album, and I don't know who came up with the idea of making her sing such a steamy song. Better lyrics and better choice of singers could have made this good album great. Nevertheless, it will top the charts.

Mangal Mangal

Mangal Mangal (Agni)
Takey Takey
Al Maddath Maula
Mangal Mangal (Aatma)

Music review: The much awaited movie 'The Rising' is finally getting ready to hit the screens, and its audio was released on July 14th. Have to say the music doesn't disappoint. I guess by now A.R.Rahman would have become an expert on period movies with his compositions for Iruvar, 1947 Earth, Zubeidaa, Lagaan, The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, Kisna and Bose The Forgotten Hero. It almost seems like he didn't even try hard to compose the songs for this movie, and just did it like its some sort of routine work. The album contains a couple of very catchy numbers like 'Mangal Mangal' and 'Main Vari Vari', but still I feel Rahman could have given just a little bit more. Nevertheless, this album is well worth listening to, for some great songs, very good singing, and since it could very well be Rahman's last period movie.

Music review: A good album by Vidyasagar, who seems to have concentrated on melodies too this time, instead of just pleasing the front-benchers, as he has been doing quite often recently. There's 'Do Re Me' for the youngsters, 'Vennila Siragadikka' for those you like melodies, and 'Kola Kolaiya' for folks who prefer folk songs. To sum it up, there's something for everyone in Ponniyin Selvan.

Music review: I'm sorry for not bringing the review of this album earlier. In case you still haven't heard the songs of this movie yet, make sure you do. I haven't heard as many Hindi movie songs this year as I would have liked, but this is hands down the best of the year I've heard so far. You'll only need to listen to the album once to get hooked to the songs. Great effort from Shantanu Moitra. I'll be looking forward to the future releases from this music director.

Music Review: The last release from the successful combination of Ilayaraja and Fazil was Kannukkul Nilavu, way back in 2000. The masters return with Oru Naal Oru Kanavu, and for sure, the music is well worth the wait. Splendid performances by all the singers, especially Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghosal. I guess I'll never figure out how the singers who don't know Tamil manage to get the diction right only for Ilayaraja. Good music gets the appreciation it deserves only if the movie too becomes a hit. Illayaraja has delivered his best, and if Fazil too is in good form, this album has all it takes to become the best musical score of 2005.

Music Review: If you are looking for the typical chartbuster-type music from this Shah Rukh Khan movie, you will most likely be let down. This album is worth a hear for its melodies, but I was disappointed that the music director of the movie decided to reuse a tune he had composed for a Telugu movie years ago, for 'Phir Raat Kati'. Et tu M.M.Kreem?

Music review: Yuvan Shankar Raja fails to perform a hat-trick of great albums, and dishes out a score that could be described at best as average. 'Saami Kitta' and 'Sakka Podu' are the two songs that help the album attain a passing grade. But if you don't like to hear Tamil being mutilated, I wouldn't recommend these songs either.
